Flying in Style: Air New Zealand’s New Uniform Is a Runway-Ready Celebration of Aotearoa

In a bold leap that blends high fashion with cultural storytelling, Air New Zealand has unleased its stunning new uniform collection, designed by none other than internationally renowned fashion designer Emilia Wickstead. Far from just another corporate wardrobe refresh, this launch is a deeply expressive homage to Aotearoa—its land, people, and proud heritage.

Debuted on April 10, 2025, the collection is a vibrant collaboration between Wickstead and tā moko artist Te Rangitu Netana, whose hand-painted prints infuse every piece with rich Māori symbolism and spirit. The result? A uniform that not only commands attention on the runway—but 35,000 feet in the sky.

 Fashion That Tells a Story

Forget stiff suits and standard-issue skirts—this is wearable art. Key standout pieces include “The Fine Print – Dress,” adorned with an intricate kōwhai motif, and “The Collective Thread – Shirt,” which carries the celestial-inspired purapura whetū pattern. These aren’t just design flourishes; they’re visual narratives grounded in tradition and identity.

Wickstead described the project as "incredibly personal," highlighting her mission to empower wearers while honoring the stories of Aotearoa. “Good design,” she says, “should evoke pride and occasion.” And with these uniforms, pride takes center stage.

Beyond Aesthetic – A Statement of Inclusivity

This collection doesn’t just look good—it stands for something. The introduction of the Ie Faitaga, to be trialed by Pasifika team members, signals Air New Zealand’s commitment to cultural representation and inclusivity. Even the pilots’ new uniforms have a story to tell, with pinstripes and a kiwi feather lining, evoking leadership, mana, and prestige.

More Than Uniform – A Movement

“This is more than just a uniform,” said Air New Zealand CEO Greg Foran. “It’s a celebration of our people, our culture, and our values.” True to form, the airline continues to buck convention—eschewing bland corporate conformity for bold storytelling and design.

The new look will undergo an onboard trial beginning May 2025, with a full rollout scheduled for 2026. As Air New Zealand’s 6,000-strong team prepares to don these designs, one thing’s certain: uniforms have never looked—or felt—so meaningful.

In an industry where image is everything, Air New Zealand is proving that fashion can fly high while staying deeply grounded in identity, artistry, and cultural pride.
